How to move your phone numbers from GoHighLevel
You keep your numbers. Which route they take, and how long it takes, depends on one thing: whether the numbers sit in your own Twilio account or in GoHighLevel’s.
Check that first, because the two answers are minutes and a few weeks, and most of this page only applies to one of them.
The steps, in order
- 1
Check which kind of number you have
In GoHighLevel, open Settings, then Phone System. A Twilio Account SID means the numbers are in your own Twilio account. No Account SID means they are GoHighLevel’s own numbers.
- 2
Give us access to your GoHighLevel account
In GoHighLevel, go to Settings, My Staff, Add Employee. Add support@inflowave.io as an Admin with all permissions, for every sub-account you want to move. You will also need each sub-account’s Location ID from Settings, Business Profile.
- 3
We register your business for texting
Approval usually takes 1 to 3 weeks. You keep using GoHighLevel as normal throughout. If your numbers are in your own Twilio account, skip this step: your registration stays as it is.
- 4
We ask GoHighLevel to move your numbers
Once the registration is approved, GoHighLevel moves the numbers to us. This takes 1 to 2 business days.
- 5
Switch day
Calls work straight away. Texting picks up within a few hours.
- 6
Check it, then cancel
Make a call and send a text from Inflowave before you cancel GoHighLevel. Cancel only once you are happy.
Can I keep my phone number?
Yes. You keep the same numbers in both cases, and calls carry on working throughout. Nothing about leaving GoHighLevel requires you to give a number up or tell your customers a new one.
Which kind of number do I have?
In GoHighLevel, open Settings, then Phone System. If you can see a Twilio Account SID, your numbers are in your own Twilio account. If there is no Account SID, you are using GoHighLevel’s own numbers, which they call LC Phone.
This is worth two minutes of your time before you read any further. The rest of this page splits on the answer.
What happens if I use my own Twilio account?
This is the quick case. Your numbers never leave your Twilio account, so there is nothing to move. We connect that account to Inflowave together on a short call, and your texting registration stays exactly as it is.
The switch takes minutes. Calls and texts keep working the whole way through.
- Your numbers stay where they are, in your account
- Your texting registration is untouched
- Never send your Twilio Auth Token by email or through a form. We set it up with you live on the call
What happens if I use GoHighLevel’s own numbers?
You keep the same numbers, and GoHighLevel moves them to us. That part takes 1 to 2 business days.
There is one thing to know, and we would rather you heard it here than halfway through. US carriers require every business that sends texts from a normal local number to be registered with them. That registration belongs to the account the number lives in, so it cannot travel with the number. It has to be done again with us.
This is not an Inflowave limitation. It is the same for anyone leaving GoHighLevel, whichever platform they move to. Any provider telling you your registration transfers is telling you something that is not true.
Will my texts stop working?
No, because we do the registration before the number moves, not after. You keep sending from GoHighLevel the entire time your new registration is in review.
On switch day, calls work straight away and texting picks up within a few hours. That gap of a few hours is the honest answer, and it is the only interruption in the whole process.
- First, we register your business for texting. You keep using GoHighLevel as normal. Approval usually takes 1 to 3 weeks
- Once that is approved, we ask GoHighLevel to move your numbers to us. 1 to 2 business days
- On switch day, calls work immediately and texting picks up within a few hours
How long does it all take?
If you use your own Twilio account, minutes. If you use GoHighLevel ’s numbers, the registration is the long pole at 1 to 3 weeks, and the number move itself is 1 to 2 business days once the registration clears. If the number is with a phone company rather than either platform, expect 1 to 3 weeks to port it.
The part worth repeating is that the long wait happens while you are still working normally in GoHighLevel. It is not downtime.
What do you need from me for the texting registration?
Four things, and the third one is where most registrations fail. A website that does not load is the most common reason carriers reject a business.
- Your legal business name and EIN, which is your US Tax ID
- Your business address
- A live website with a privacy policy on it
- A few examples of the texts you actually send
What if my number is with a phone company like Verizon or AT&T?
We port it to Inflowave. This usually takes 1 to 3 weeks. Your old provider keeps the number working right up to the moment it switches, so there is no window where calls fail.
Keep your old account open until we confirm the move is complete. Closing it early is the one way to actually lose a number.
We do the move, you keep working
You keep using GoHighLevel as normal while we set everything up, and you only cancel it after you have seen everything working on Inflowave. Tell us what you have and we will tell you exactly which of the routes above applies to you.
