Short answer: almost no tool can DM someone the moment they follow you, because Instagram does not tell third-party tools when a follow happens. In October 2025 Meta opened a limited beta called Follow to DM, and ManyChat is the only tool we found with it. It is also, in our view, a feature you do not need. The people worth messaging are the ones who come to you, and Instagram already gives you a clean signal for those.
This guide explains why new follower automation is so rare, exactly what ManyChat's version does and where it stops, why we think chasing it is the wrong priority, and what to build instead.
The short answer
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Can a tool auto-DM every new Instagram follower? | Not through Instagram's normal tool access. Meta sends tools no "someone followed you" event. |
| Does any tool offer it? | ManyChat, through Follow to DM, which launched in beta in October 2025 as a Meta-approved feature. It is the only tool we found with it. Meta's own approval is what makes it possible. |
| Is it available to everyone? | No. ManyChat's own FAQ says it is "still in Beta and not available to everyone", and that access depends on your connection method and on eligibility granted by Meta. |
| How often can it message someone? | Once per follower, and Meta allows one Follow to DM message per person per week. |
| Does Inro, or Inflowave, do it? | No. Inro's own guide says it does not offer a new follower trigger. Inflowave does not send DMs to new followers either. |
| Do you need it? | In our view, no. Follow is the cheapest action on Instagram. Comments, story replies and inbound DMs are stronger signals, and tools can answer all three. |
The rule we work by: greet people who act, not people who merely arrive. A comment, a story reply or a message is someone raising a hand. A follow is someone walking past.
Why most tools cannot DM new followers
Instagram tools get information from Meta through notifications called webhooks. When something happens on your account that Meta wants tools to know about, it sends one: a new message, a comment, a mention, a story reply. There is no webhook for a new follower. A tool built on the official connection simply never finds out that someone followed you, so it has nothing to react to.
The second barrier is the messaging rule. The way Meta's messaging works for businesses, you can message a person after they have messaged you, and you can send a single private reply to someone who commented. Following your account does not open a conversation, so even a tool that somehow spotted the follow would have no permission to start one.
That leaves tools with three options, and only one is safe:
- Ask Meta for a special feature. This is what ManyChat did, and it is the only route that works inside the rules.
- Poll the follower list. Some tools check your followers every so often and compare the list. This does not give a DM permission, which is why it ends up pushing people toward workarounds.
- Use unofficial access. Scripts, password bots and browser automation that act as a person. These put the account at risk and are the reason Meta restricts accounts. Inro's guide says it plainly: tools that promise to DM every new follower are either using unofficial access, which puts the account at risk, or sitting in a limited private beta.
Only the comment, story reply and message signals are open to every tool. The intent row is our reading, not a measured figure.
What Meta changed in October 2025: Follow to DM
On 22 October 2025 ManyChat announced Follow to DM, a feature that sends a direct message to someone shortly after they follow your Instagram account. ManyChat describes it as a Meta-approved automation and calls itself the first market partner for it. The headline of the announcement calls it the first-ever Follow to DM feature.
Here is what ManyChat's own pages say about how it works and where it stops. The details come from its community announcement and its Follow to DM FAQ, last edited on 29 April 2026.
| Detail | What ManyChat says |
|---|---|
| Status | Beta. "This feature is still in Beta and not available to everyone." |
| Who gets access | It depends on your Instagram connection method and on eligibility granted by Meta. ManyChat says it cannot pinpoint what causes a restriction because Meta controls it. |
| Connection requirement | The account must be connected through ManyChat's newer Unified Instagram onboarding flow. |
| Who it messages | New followers who have not interacted with your DMs before. People who already messaged you do not receive it, by design. |
| Frequency | It triggers only once per follower, and Meta allows only one Follow to DM message per person per week. A person who follows several accounts using it hears from the first one only. |
| Timing | A delay of 5 or 10 minutes after the follow. |
| Free plan | Free accounts can send an opening DM and one follow-up containing a link. |
| After the first message | The person has to reply or tap a button that is not a link to open a 24-hour window for further messages. |
Read that table slowly, because it tells you a lot about what the feature is for. It reaches people who have not spoken to you, it can only send them one opening message, and nothing further can be sent until they answer.
The announcement thread also shows how fragile the rollout has been. ManyChat staff acknowledged connection problems from late October 2025, and users reported that the automation worked for a while and then stopped, or never worked after setup. In a staff answer the account is told that access "is controlled by Meta and can vary by account". Treat it as a beta you may or may not be let into.
Follow to DM from ManyChat's own description. Step five is the one that decides whether a conversation ever starts.
Who else offers new follower DMs
Of the tools we checked, ManyChat is the only one with Meta's Follow to DM. We could not find it at any other tool, and ManyChat itself describes being the first partner, so this may change as Meta widens the rollout. Check each vendor's own help pages before you rely on it.
Inro is a useful reference, because it is a DM automation tool aimed squarely at this audience. Its guide to welcome messages states that "Instagram does not give third-party tools a new-follower trigger, so a true follow-then-DM automation is not available through the official API". Its recommendation is to get new people to take an action you are allowed to answer, and then greet them there. The triggers it lists are a reply to your Story, a keyword comment on a post or Reel, a first DM, and a click-to-message ad.
If you are comparing the field, our ManyChat alternatives guide covers the tools side by side, and our ManyChat pricing breakdown covers what you pay.
Be wary of any tool that advertises "DM every new follower" without naming Meta's feature. Past the official route there are only scripts that impersonate a person, and an account that gets caught pays for it with restricted messaging or a lost account.
Why we think you do not need it
This section is our opinion. We cannot give you a measured reply rate for follow-triggered messages, because we have not run it and ManyChat has not published one. What we can do is reason from how the feature is built and from how people behave on Instagram.
A follow is the cheapest action on the platform. It takes one tap, it needs no thought, and people follow accounts for a hundred reasons that have nothing to do with buying: a giveaway, a Reel they liked once, a curiosity, a polite follow-back. Most of that audience will never become a client.
The feature is designed for people who have not engaged. ManyChat's own rules say it only messages new followers who have not interacted with your DMs before. By construction it skips anyone who has already spoken to you, which is the warmest part of your audience. What is left is the coldest part.
You get one message, then you wait. Meta allows one Follow to DM message per person per week, and you cannot send more until the person replies or taps a button. An opening message to a stranger that must earn a reply before anything else is possible is a low-odds bet.
The signals that matter are free and open. Someone who comments a keyword, replies to a Story or sends a message has told you what they want. Those events reach every tool, you can answer them instantly, and they sit on the side of the line Meta allows.
Focus is a real cost. An agency running Instagram for a client has a limited amount of setup time and a limited amount of attention on every thread. Time spent greeting passers-by is time not spent answering the people already asking.
None of this means a welcome message is harmful. It means that it is the least valuable automation to build first, and that building it should not come at the expense of the ones that bring in booked calls.
Where your best leads come from instead
Think about who actually becomes a client. It is almost always someone who did something more than follow: they commented, they replied, they asked, they clicked, they booked. Every one of those is an action you can respond to.
| Signal | What it tells you | Can a tool answer it? |
|---|---|---|
| Comment with a keyword | They asked for something you offered | Yes, with a private reply to the comment |
| Story reply | They reacted to something specific | Yes, inside the conversation they started |
| Story mention | They spoke about you in public | Yes |
| Inbound DM | They want an answer now | Yes, within the messaging window |
| Click-to-message ad | They paid attention to an ad enough to tap | Yes |
| Link in bio, form or booking | They went to your site and acted | Yes, by email, text or DM |
| Follow | They tapped once | Only in ManyChat's beta |
The pattern is simple. Everything above the last row is something you can reach on a normal tool, and everything above it shows more effort than a follow.
What to build instead
You can cover the same goal, which is turning attention into conversations, with triggers that are open to everyone. Here is a setup that works for a coach, a local business or an agency running a client account.
- Give people something to ask for. Pin a post or Reel that says "Comment GUIDE and I will send it", and make the offer specific enough to be worth a comment.
- Reply to comments with a private message. Set a keyword trigger so the comment starts a DM thread, which is the single most reliable way to open a conversation.
- Use Stories as the front door. Add a question or poll sticker, and answer every reply. A Story reply is an invitation you are allowed to accept.
- Handle the first message well. Whoever writes in first should get a fast, human sounding answer, whether from a person or from an AI assistant with a clear hand-off.
- Add ice breakers. Instagram lets you set a few starter questions on your profile, so a visitor can open a chat with one tap instead of a blank box.
- Capture contact details early. Move from the DM to a form, a calendar link or an email, so the lead is not stuck inside one app.
- Track where each conversation started. Knowing which comment, Story or ad created a lead tells you what to do more of.
- Follow up the leads that went quiet. A reminder a day or two later recovers more conversations than a dozen welcome messages to strangers.
Eight setups that reach people who have already acted. None depends on a beta or on Meta's approval.
Mistakes to avoid
- Using a password bot. Any tool that asks for your Instagram password and promises to message new followers is working outside the official rules. This is how accounts get restricted.
- Messaging everyone you scrape. Sending cold messages to people pulled from a follower list is not a welcome message. It is unsolicited outreach, and recipients treat it that way.
- Expecting a whole sequence to run. With Follow to DM, you get an opening message and, on ManyChat's free plan, one follow-up containing a link. Anything further waits until the person replies or taps a button.
- Measuring followers instead of conversations. A follower count says nothing about leads. Count conversations started and calls booked.
- Ignoring the people who already wrote in. A welcome flow for strangers while real inbound messages sit unanswered is the wrong order of work.
- Promising clients new follower automation. If a client asks for it, explain that it depends on a Meta beta, and offer the comment and Story routes that work today.
If you still want to try Follow to DM
Some accounts will want to test it anyway, and that is a reasonable experiment if you are eligible. Treat it as a test with a rule for stopping.
- Check whether the template appears in your ManyChat account. If it does not, you are not eligible, and nothing you do will change that.
- Keep the opening message to one friendly line and one easy question, with no hard sell and no link.
- Run it for a fixed period, such as two weeks, and compare the people it messaged against people who came in through comments or Stories.
- Count replies, then count conversations that became a booking or a sale. If the numbers do not justify it, switch it off.
- Keep the rest of your inbox in one place, so a reply from a follower does not get lost.
How Inflowave handles this
Inflowave does not send DMs to new followers. Instagram gives no tool that signal, and we would rather tell you that than imply a capability that depends on an unofficial route.
What Inflowave does is react to the events Instagram does open up. The workflow builder can start from an incoming message, a comment on a post, a Story reply, a Story mention, or a click-to-message ad, and then reply, tag the lead, ask a question or hand the conversation to a person. Every thread lands in one unified inbox, so a lead who comments on Monday and messages on Thursday is one record, not two.
You can build the comment-to-DM and Story reply flows described above in the AI workflow builder, and let the AI chatbot handle first replies and the overnight backlog, with a hand-over to a person when the lead is ready. Questions people ask
Can you auto-DM new followers on Instagram?
Not through Instagram's normal tool access, because Meta does not send tools a notification when someone follows an account. The one official exception is Follow to DM, a beta that ManyChat launched in October 2025. It is limited by Meta's eligibility rules.
What is Follow to DM?
It is a ManyChat feature that sends a direct message to a person shortly after they follow your Instagram account, after a delay of 5 or 10 minutes. ManyChat describes it as Meta-approved and in beta. It only messages new followers who have not interacted with your DMs before.
Is Follow to DM available to everyone?
No. ManyChat's FAQ says the feature is in beta and not available to everyone, and that access depends on your connection method and on eligibility granted by Meta. If the template does not appear in your account, you are not eligible yet.
How many times can a new follower be messaged?
Once per follower, and Meta allows only one Follow to DM message per person per week. If someone follows several accounts that use the feature, only the first one they followed sends the message. After that, further messages need the person to reply or tap a button.
Does Inro have a new follower trigger?
No. Inro's own guide says Instagram does not give third-party tools a new follower trigger, and it points to Story replies, keyword comments, first messages and click-to-message ads as the triggers to use. That is the same advice we give.
Are there tools that DM new followers without Meta's approval?
Some tools claim to. They work through unofficial access, such as scripts or password-based logins that act like a person, and that puts the Instagram account at risk. We do not recommend them for any client account.
Does messaging new followers actually work?
We have no measured figure to give you, and ManyChat has not published one. Our view is that a follow is a low-effort action and that people who comment, reply to Stories or send a message are far warmer. The honest way to find out is to test it on your own account with a clear stopping rule.
Why does Inflowave not offer it?
Instagram gives no tool a follow event, and the only official route is a limited beta tied to one partner. We build on the signals open to every account, which also happen to be the strongest ones, and we say so plainly instead of promising a feature we cannot deliver safely.
What should I do instead of welcoming new followers?
Give people a reason to start a conversation: a keyword comment offer, a Story question, ice breakers on your profile and fast replies to messages. Then answer every one of those signals quickly, and follow up the ones that go quiet. Our checklist above covers the eight setups to start with.
Can I welcome new followers manually?
Yes. Nothing stops you from sending a message by hand, but remember the messaging rules: you can generally only message people who have messaged you or commented. A friendly public comment on their latest post, or a reply to their Story, is the natural way to say hello.
Is it safe to use the follower list to send cold messages?
We would not. Messaging people who never contacted you is unsolicited outreach, recipients treat it that way, and it risks the account. Warm signals produce better conversations with none of the risk.
