Instagram Messages Not Showing: Where DMs Hide and How to Fix It

You open Instagram, there is a badge on the messages icon, and the inbox is empty. Or someone swears they sent you a DM days ago and it is nowhere to be found. Most of the time this is not a bug, it is one of a handful of places Instagram quietly hides messages, or a setting that stopped a third party tool from seeing them.

This guide walks through where missing messages actually are, why a connected inbox or CRM might show fewer messages than the Instagram app, and what to check in each case.

The short answer

Situation Likely answer
A message you can see a notification for isn't in your main inbox It is probably in Message requests, or your General tab rather than Primary, not lost
Someone says they messaged you and you never got it Check Message requests and the Hidden Requests folder at the bottom of it. Instagram sends no notification for either
Messages show as unread badges but the thread is blank Usually a loading or app cache issue, not a missing message
A CRM, inbox tool or chatbot stopped receiving Instagram DMs Check the "Allow access to messages" setting under Connected tools in Instagram's privacy settings
A business tool can reply to old messages but not send new ones to a contact That is Meta's 24 hour messaging window, not a fault in the tool
You can't find messages from months ago Instagram does not limit how long DMs are kept, so look in requests and folders before assuming they are gone
Stories are not loading alongside your messages That is usually a connection or app cache problem, separate from the messaging issue

Where Instagram actually hides messages

Instagram splits incoming direct messages into more folders than most people realise, and only one of them, the main Primary inbox, gets a badge you notice straight away.

Message requests. If someone who doesn't follow you, or isn't someone Instagram considers a likely contact, messages you for the first time, it does not land in your main inbox. It goes to Message requests, a separate tab you have to open on purpose. The sender doesn't see that you've read it until you accept, and you can also decline or delete it without them knowing.

Primary and General. On professional accounts, Instagram splits accepted conversations across two tabs: Primary, for threads it thinks you want notified about, and General, for everything else. A reply sitting in General can go unnoticed if you only check Primary out of habit.

Hidden Requests, also labelled Spam. Inside the Requests tab, scrolling to the bottom reveals a further folder, Hidden Requests on some app versions and Spam on others. Instagram routes anything it flags as likely spam here automatically, and it never sends a notification for it. If you've set up a Hidden Words list under Settings and activity, messages matching those words or phrases go straight here too, and the sender is never told.

Normal threads that quietly archive or mute. Muting a thread does not delete it, but it does stop notifications, which is a common reason a long running conversation appears to have "gone quiet" when nothing was actually sent.

None of these mean the message is gone. It means it is filed somewhere you are not looking.

Why "Failed to load earlier messages" and blank threads happen

A thread that shows a notification badge but no content on open is almost always a client side issue: the app's local cache is out of sync with the server, a patchy connection stopped the thread finishing its load, or the app itself is out of date. Closing and reopening the app, switching networks, or updating the app usually clears it.

If a whole conversation's history has genuinely vanished rather than just failing to load, that is different from a temporary glitch. Deleted messages and unsent messages are gone for both people straight away, and there is no official way to recover them.

Why a connected inbox or CRM stops receiving Instagram DMs

This trips up agencies and businesses the most, because the messages are still arriving on Instagram, just not where the team is working from.

Businesses and creators who connect a third party inbox, CRM, or chatbot do it through Meta's official Instagram API, not by logging into the app on their behalf. That connection depends on a setting most people never look at.

The "Allow access to messages" setting

In the Instagram app, this sits under Settings and privacy, then Messages, then Connected tools (on some versions it is under Message requests, then Connected tools). It is a single toggle: Allow access to messages. When it's off, connected tools cannot read or reply to your Instagram DMs, and you'll usually see a message like "the account owner has disabled access to Instagram direct messages" in the tool itself.

The setting turns off on its own more often than people expect, usually from one of these: a password change or Instagram security checkpoint, which revokes third party message access as part of re-securing the account with no notification to the connected tool; someone with admin access toggling it off while tidying up permissions; or disconnecting and reconnecting the linked Facebook Page, which resets it.

For a Business or Creator account linked to a Page, there is a second, related setting on the Facebook side: under the Page's Linked accounts settings, a separate toggle allows access to Instagram messages in the Page's own inbox.

Business inbox vs Meta Business Suite vs a third party tool

It helps to be clear on what each of these actually is:

  • The Instagram app's own inbox is what you see when you open Direct on your phone or in a browser. Everyone with the login sees the same threads.
  • Meta Business Suite is Meta's own free tool for managing Instagram and Facebook messages together from a browser, for Business or Creator accounts. It reads from the same official messaging API that third party tools use.
  • A third party CRM or inbox tool connects through that same API, with "Allow access to messages" switched on. It isn't a second copy of your DMs, it's a window into the same conversations, so anything missing is usually a permissions or connection problem, not a separate inbox falling behind.

If messages show up in Meta Business Suite but not in a connected CRM, that narrows the fault to the CRM's own connection (an expired token, a disconnected Page, or the access toggle), rather than anything wrong with the Instagram account itself.

The 24 hour messaging window, and why it looks like "messages not showing"

Separately from access being switched off, businesses using the Instagram API through a CRM or chatbot run into a time limit that can look like a messaging fault from the outside.

Meta's rule for apps that send messages through the Instagram API is that a business can only send a message to someone within 24 hours of that person's last message to them. The window resets every time the contact messages again, and can also be opened by a comment on a post or Reel, a Story reply, a Story mention, or a click to DM ad.

Once 24 hours pass with no new message from the contact, an automated or manual send through the API is blocked, even though the thread still shows all the earlier history. Meta allows one narrow exception: a message carrying the HUMAN_AGENT tag can go out up to 7 days after the contact's last message, meant for an actual person answering a pending query, not automation, and it cannot be used for marketing.

This is not a bug in whichever tool you're using. It is a platform rule that exists on every tool built on the official API, including Inflowave's. If a reply fails with something like "can only reply within 24 hours," that is this window, and the fix is for the contact to message again, not a setting to change.

How to fix each cause, step by step

Check Message requests and the hidden folders first

  1. Open Direct (the paper plane icon) on Instagram.
  2. Tap Requests near the top.
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the Requests list and open Hidden Requests (shown as Spam on some versions).
  4. Open anything relevant. Accepting a request moves it into your normal Primary or General inbox; you can also decline or delete it.
  5. If you've switched on a Hidden Words filter under Settings and activity, check it isn't routing messages you actually want to see into Hidden Requests, and adjust the word list if it is.
  6. Check both the Primary and General tabs in your main inbox. Instagram splits accepted conversations across the two, and General doesn't get the same notification treatment as Primary.

Fix a thread that won't load

  1. Close the Instagram app fully and reopen it.
  2. Check you're on the latest version in your app store and update if not.
  3. Switch networks (Wi-Fi to mobile data or back) and reopen the thread.
  4. If nothing works, log out and back in. This clears the local message cache without deleting anything on Instagram's side.

Restore a third party tool's access to your messages

  1. Open Instagram, then Settings and privacy.
  2. Go to Messages, then Connected tools (or Message requests, then Connected tools, on some versions).
  3. Turn on Allow access to messages.
  4. If the account is linked to a Facebook Page, also check the Page's Linked accounts settings and make sure Allow access to Instagram messages in Inbox is on.
  5. Reconnect the integration in your CRM or inbox tool so it re-reads the permission, then send a test message from another profile to confirm it arrives.

Confirm it is the 24 hour window, not a broken connection

  1. Check when the contact last messaged you. If it's over 24 hours, that's the window.
  2. Check whether the tool's error mentions a time window or expired session, rather than a connection or authentication failure.
  3. If it's urgent and within 7 days, a human replying from the native app, or through a tool's manual reply with the right tag, may still get through.
  4. Otherwise, wait for the contact to message again, which reopens the window immediately.

Common mistakes and causes, ranked by how often they come up

  1. Assuming a missing message is deleted. Most "missing" DMs are sitting in Message requests, General instead of Primary, or Hidden Requests, not gone.
  2. Not realising a password change or checkpoint switched off third party access. This is the single biggest cause of "our Instagram inbox tool just stopped working overnight" reports, and it gives no warning to the tool.
  3. Confusing the 24 hour API window with a broken integration. The thread still exists and shows full history, the window only blocks new outbound sends from the business side.
  4. Checking only one inbox, and forgetting the Page-side permission. If Meta Business Suite shows a message a connected CRM doesn't, the fault is in the CRM's connection. For accounts linked to a Facebook Page, there are two separate access toggles, one on Instagram and one on the Page, and either can block things on its own.
  5. Blaming the platform for an app cache problem. A blank thread that loads fine after closing and reopening the app is rarely worth troubleshooting further.

Running this through Inflowave

Inflowave's unified inbox includes Instagram as one of its primary channels alongside Facebook, WhatsApp, SMS and email, so Instagram DMs sit in the same inbox as every other conversation a team is working from, rather than in a separate tab.

Instagram messages reach that inbox through Meta's official Instagram Messaging API webhook, the same mechanism Meta Business Suite and other API based tools use, so a message that shows up in Meta's own tools should also reach Inflowave in real time once the connection is in place.

If Meta revokes an account's token early, for example after the kind of security event that also switches off "Allow access to messages," Inflowave's daily token check detects it and flags the account for reconnection rather than letting it fail silently.

Inflowave also enforces Meta's 24 hour and 7 day messaging windows on the server before a reply is sent, and returns a specific reason when a send is blocked (for example, that the window has expired and the contact needs to message again) instead of a generic failure, so it is clear when a blocked reply is a Meta rule rather than a connection problem.

Questions people ask

Why does Instagram show I have a message but I can't find it?

It is almost always sitting in Message requests rather than your main inbox, because Instagram routes first messages from accounts you don't follow there by default. Open Direct, tap Requests, and check the Hidden Requests (or Spam) folder at the bottom of that list too, since Instagram doesn't notify you when something lands there.

Why does Instagram say "Failed to load earlier messages"?

This is normally a connection or app cache issue rather than the message being gone. Closing and reopening the app, switching networks, or updating the app usually fixes it.

Why are my Instagram stories not loading?

Story loading problems are usually separate from messaging problems and come down to the same causes: a weak connection, an outdated app, or a local cache that needs clearing by closing and reopening the app or logging out and back in.

Why does Instagram show messages but nothing is there when I open it?

The thread exists but the content hasn't finished loading, often because of a connection drop partway through. Scrolling to trigger "load earlier messages" again, or restarting the app, usually brings the content back.

How can I download my Instagram chat history?

Instagram lets you request a data export from Settings and privacy, Accounts Center, Your information and permissions, which can include messages as a file. It is a full account export rather than a single thread export, and it takes time to prepare.

Why did my CRM or chatbot stop receiving Instagram DMs?

The most common cause is the "Allow access to messages" setting under Connected tools in Instagram's Messages settings getting switched off, often by a password change or security checkpoint rather than anyone meaning to disable it. Check that toggle first, then check the equivalent Page-side setting if the account is linked to a Facebook Page.

What does "the account owner has disabled access to Instagram direct messages" mean?

It means the Allow access to messages toggle for connected tools is off, so Instagram is refusing to hand that tool your DMs even though the tool is still connected. Turning the toggle back on and reconnecting the integration resolves it.

Can a business message someone on Instagram who hasn't messaged first?

Not through the official Instagram API. A business can only reply within an open messaging window that the other person started, by messaging, commenting, replying to a Story, or clicking a click to DM ad. There is no API path for sending the first message to someone who hasn't contacted the account.

What is the 24 hour rule for Instagram business messages?

It is Meta's limit on how long a business has to reply to someone through the Instagram API after that person's last message. After 24 hours the window closes and ordinary replies are blocked until the contact messages again, with a narrow 7 day exception for a human agent handling an existing query.

Does muting an Instagram conversation delete it?

No. Muting only stops notifications for that thread. The messages and the conversation stay exactly where they were, which is why a muted thread can look abandoned when it has simply gone quiet on notifications rather than content.

Why do some Instagram message requests go to a different folder automatically?

Instagram's own filtering sorts requests it judges likely spam, or anything matching a Hidden Words list you've set up, into the Hidden Requests (or Spam) folder inside Requests, with no notification sent. Review that folder manually, and adjust your Hidden Words list if it's catching messages you want to see.

Is there a way to see every hidden Instagram message folder in one place?

Not within the Instagram app itself. You have to check Primary, General, Requests, and Hidden Requests inside Requests, each on its own. A connected CRM that pulls Instagram DMs through the API generally surfaces accepted conversations in one place, but requests still need accepting on Instagram first.
