WhatsApp Account Banned or Restricted: Why It Happens and How to Get It Back

"Your account is banned" means something different depending on which WhatsApp you mean. A personal number banned for using GB WhatsApp has nothing to do with a business number restricted for a low quality rating on the WhatsApp Business Platform, and the fixes don't cross over. This guide covers both: what triggers each kind of ban, how to request a review, and how to avoid it happening again if you're messaging customers through the Business Platform.

The short answer

Question or situation Answer
My phone shows "This account is not allowed to use WhatsApp" with no countdown A permanent ban on your number. Tap Request a review in the app if the option is there. There's no other way to appeal from outside WhatsApp.
My phone shows "Temporarily banned" with a countdown A temporary ban, usually for using an unofficial app (GB WhatsApp, FM WhatsApp and similar) or for scraping. Switch to the official app and the ban lifts when the timer ends.
I got banned and I never sent spam WhatsApp's own help page for this says the ban follows a Terms of Service breach. It's usually one of: an unofficial app, automated bulk messaging, mass unsolicited messages, or a large number of people blocking or reporting you.
My business number shows "Restricted" or "Flagged" in WhatsApp Manager That's a Business Platform status, not a personal ban. Restricted means you've hit your messaging limit for the moment. Flagged means your quality rating dropped to low. Neither is a ban by itself.
Our WhatsApp Business Account got locked after a warning That's Meta's Business Platform policy enforcement, a separate and stricter system from the consumer app ban. You appeal it through Business Support Home, not the phone's Request a review button.
Can I get my number back if the ban is upheld No. Once a ban is confirmed, that phone number can't be used with WhatsApp again. You'd need a different number.
Will a VPN or changing my profile photo get me unbanned No. Bans are tied to the number and the behaviour Meta recorded against it, not your IP address or profile.
Does WhatsApp tell you exactly why you were banned Not usually in detail. The in-app message names a category (spam, unofficial app) but rarely the specific messages or reports that triggered it.

Two different WhatsApp bans, and why that matters

WhatsApp runs as two separate products with two separate rulebooks.

The first is the consumer app, the one most people have on their phone, including WhatsApp Business for small shop owners. A ban here is account-level: WhatsApp decides your number can't use the service and shows a message on the lock screen.

The second is the WhatsApp Business Platform (sometimes still called the Cloud API or Business API), the system companies use to message customers at scale through a CRM, helpdesk or marketing tool. Bans and restrictions here work through a different, documented policy enforcement ladder, tied to a WhatsApp Business Account (WABA) rather than a single phone screen.

If you're running customer messaging through a CRM, a help desk, or an agency tool, you're almost certainly on the Business Platform, and the rest of this guide's enforcement section applies to you, not the consumer "Temporarily banned" screen.

Why the consumer app bans accounts

According to WhatsApp's own help centre, a ban means WhatsApp's systems, automated or human, found a breach of its Terms of Service. Two causes come up constantly in that documentation and in reports from banned users:

  • Unofficial apps. GB WhatsApp, FM WhatsApp, TM WhatsApp and similar mods are not made by WhatsApp. WhatsApp states plainly that it doesn't support them because it can't verify their security, and using one violates the Terms of Service. Periodic enforcement waves specifically target devices running these apps.
  • Scraping. Automated collection of other users' phone numbers, profile photos or status updates, at any scale, is also a Terms of Service breach.

The first time either of these is detected, the account usually gets a temporary ban with a countdown. If you keep using the unofficial app or keep scraping after that, the next step is a permanent ban: the in-app message drops the countdown and reads something like "This account is not allowed to use WhatsApp."

Other common grounds for a ban, per WhatsApp's policies, include sending bulk or automated messages without using an approved business tool, a high volume of people blocking you or marking your messages as spam, and messages involving illegal activity, child exploitation, or impersonation.

How the "Request a review" appeal works for a personal number

  1. Open the official WhatsApp app. Don't reinstall it hoping that clears the ban; it's tied to the number, not the install.
  2. On the ban screen, look for a Request a review button.
  3. Submit the request. WhatsApp's review combines automated checks with human reviewers for accounts that need a closer look.
  4. Wait for the outcome inside the app. If the ban is lifted, the app will work again on that number. If it's upheld, you'll be told the decision is final.

A few things to know going in:

  • If there's no Request a review option on your ban screen, WhatsApp is telling you the decision is final and there's nothing further to submit.
  • Third-party "unban WhatsApp" services, tools or guides that promise a fast fix for a fee have no access to WhatsApp's systems. They can't change the outcome.
  • If the ban is upheld, that number is done with WhatsApp permanently. You'll need a different number to register a new account.

How the WhatsApp Business Platform restricts and bans numbers

This is the system behind Inflowave, most CRMs, and most "WhatsApp API" providers. Meta documents it as a graduated enforcement ladder rather than a single ban screen, built around two separate mechanics: the phone number's quality rating, and policy violations on the WhatsApp Business Account.

Quality rating and messaging limits

Every connected business phone number carries a quality rating, shown as a colour band (commonly described as high, medium or low). Meta calculates it from recent recipient behaviour on that number: blocks, spam reports, and people who stop responding or react negatively.

Alongside quality, every number has a messaging limit, the number of unique people it can message outside an active customer conversation inside a rolling 24-hour period. New numbers start at a limit of 250 and can move up to 2,000 by verifying the business or sending 2,000 delivered template messages to unique recipients over 30 days. From there, Meta can automatically raise the limit further, towards 10,000, 100,000 and eventually unlimited, if the number keeps sending high-quality messages and using a healthy share of its current limit.

Meta's own messaging limits documentation describes two statuses that sit on top of this: Flagged, when the quality rating drops to low, which blocks you from moving up a limit tier (and can push your limit down a tier if quality doesn't recover within about a week), and Restricted, when you've used up your messaging limit for the current 24-hour window and can't send further outbound messages until it resets. Neither of these is a permanent ban on its own. A Restricted number recovers on its own once the window rolls over; a Flagged one recovers once the rating improves.

Policy violations: a stricter, separate ladder

A WhatsApp Business Account can also be restricted or shut down for breaking the WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy, the Commerce Policy, or the Business Terms of Service, independent of quality rating. Meta's developer documentation on policy enforcement lays out an escalating sequence:

  1. A warning, naming the violation.
  2. A 1 or 3 day block on sending marketing, utility and authentication templates, and on adding new phone numbers to the account.
  3. A 5, 7 or 30 day block on sending any outbound messages at all, and on adding phone numbers.
  4. An indefinite account lock, removable only through an appeal.
  5. Permanent disablement of the Business Account, the final step after repeated violations don't stop.

Serious violations, Meta names child exploitation, scams, terrorism-related content and illegal drug sales specifically, skip straight to offboarding without the graduated steps. High-risk categories like adult content, alcohol or tobacco sales, gambling, and unsafe supplements, along with spam and templates deliberately miscategorised to dodge review, are the violations Meta lists as the common drivers of the earlier tiers.

Appealing a Business Platform restriction

  1. Go to Business Support Home in Meta Business Suite (not the phone's Request a review screen; that's for the consumer app).
  2. Select the affected WhatsApp Business Account.
  3. Choose the violation listed and select Request Review.
  4. Add any supporting details or context for why you believe the action was wrong.
  5. Wait for Meta's decision, documented as arriving within 24 to 48 hours, returned as either Unchanged or Reversed in Business Manager.

Meta is explicit that not every violation is eligible for appeal; severe categories in particular may not offer a review option at all.

Preventing a Business Platform restriction in the first place

  1. Get opt-in before you send anything. Meta requires a clear opt-in that names your business and what the person is agreeing to receive, collected outside WhatsApp (a web form, a checkbox at checkout, a verbal agreement on a call), before your first template message. A pre-ticked box doesn't count.
  2. Only message people who said yes. Importing a list and template-blasting it is the single fastest way to collect blocks and spam reports, which drags your quality rating down.
  3. Categorise templates honestly. Utility, marketing and authentication templates are reviewed differently. Marketing content submitted as a utility template is a misclassification Meta explicitly calls out as a policy violation, not a shortcut.
  4. Respect the 24-hour window. Once a customer messages you, you can reply freely for 24 hours. After that, only an approved template restarts the conversation. Trying to work around this with disguised free-form messages reads as spam to Meta's systems.
  5. Watch your quality rating, not just whether messages send. A Flagged status is a warning you still have time to act on before your limit drops.
  6. Act on a warning immediately. The 1 to 3 day blocks exist precisely so you can fix the behaviour before it escalates to a 30-day block or an indefinite lock.
  7. Never run personal-app mods on a business line, and never let staff scrape contacts or numbers for outreach lists. Both are grounds for enforcement regardless of which side of the platform they happen on.

Common mistakes that lead here

  • Assuming a personal ban and a Business Platform restriction use the same support path. They don't; mixing them up wastes the appeal window.
  • Treating "Flagged" or "Restricted" in WhatsApp Manager as a ban and panicking, when it's usually temporary and self-resolving.
  • Buying or reusing a phone number with a history of spam reports on WhatsApp, then being surprised when the quality rating starts low.
  • Sending the first message to someone before they've opted in, then trying to justify it after the fact as a "utility" message.
  • Ignoring a warning notification because messages are still sending, only to be blocked outright a few days later.
  • Expecting a fee-based "unban" service to intervene with Meta. Nothing outside WhatsApp's own appeal flow changes the outcome.

Running this through Inflowave

Inflowave connects WhatsApp numbers through Meta's official Embedded Signup flow, which registers the number as a WhatsApp Business Account on the WhatsApp Business Platform rather than through the consumer app. Numbers bought inside Inflowave are provisioned as WhatsApp-capable and registered the same way.

Inflowave enforces Meta's 24-hour messaging window on every connected number: a free-form reply is allowed only within 24 hours of the customer's last inbound message, and outside that window the platform requires an approved template.

Because Inflowave subscribes to Meta's webhooks for the connected account, policy and quality events reach you as soon as Meta sends them, rather than you discovering a restriction when messages stop going out. If Meta flags a policy violation on the account, Inflowave sends a critical in-app and email alert naming the WABA ID and the reason Meta gave. If a template is rejected, disabled or paused, you get a named alert for that template. If the phone number's quality rating changes, you get a quality alert, marked critical when the limit drops into the red band.

Inflowave doesn't appeal violations for you. Review requests still go through Meta's Business Support Home, as described above.

Questions people ask

My WhatsApp number was banned without any reason. What should I do?

Open the official app and look for Request a review on the ban screen. WhatsApp rarely explains the exact trigger in detail, but the review is still your only route back in. If there's no review option, the ban is final for that number.

How do I contact WhatsApp directly about a ban?

There's no phone line or email for personal account bans. The Request a review button inside the app is the official channel. For a WhatsApp Business Account on the Business Platform, use Business Support Home in Meta Business Suite instead.

What is a WhatsApp account review?

It's WhatsApp's process for checking whether a ban or restriction was correct, combining automated checks with a human reviewer for accounts that need a closer look. For the consumer app it runs from the ban screen. For the Business Platform it runs through Business Support Home and is reported back as Unchanged or Reversed.

Why is my WhatsApp account restricted right now?

For a personal account, "restricted" usually isn't the wording you'll see; you'll see "Temporarily banned" instead, most often tied to an unofficial app or scraping. For a Business Platform number, Restricted specifically means you've used your full messaging limit for the current 24-hour window and it will lift when the window resets.

Can I use WhatsApp with a different number while banned?

Yes. A ban applies to the specific phone number, not to you as a person. You can register a new WhatsApp account on a different number while the old one stays banned or under review.

Does using GB WhatsApp or a similar mod get you banned?

Yes. WhatsApp doesn't support unofficial apps like GB WhatsApp, FM WhatsApp or TM WhatsApp, and using one is a Terms of Service breach that commonly triggers a temporary ban first, then a permanent one if you keep using it.

How long does a temporary WhatsApp ban last?

WhatsApp shows a countdown on the ban screen itself, and durations vary by case. WhatsApp doesn't publish a fixed length that applies to every temporary ban.

What happens to my chat history if my account is permanently banned?

You lose access to WhatsApp on that number. Chat backups stored in your phone's cloud backup service are separate from the ban and may still be restored if you register a different number, but this depends on your backup settings rather than anything WhatsApp controls during the ban.

Is a WhatsApp Business Account restriction the same as a personal account ban?

No. They're enforced by different systems with different rules and different appeal routes. A quality rating drop or messaging limit restriction on the Business Platform is usually recoverable on its own; a policy violation lock on a WhatsApp Business Account follows Meta's escalating enforcement ladder and needs an appeal through Business Support Home.

Can a low quality rating alone get my WhatsApp Business number banned?

Not directly. A low rating moves your number to Flagged and can shrink your messaging limit, but it doesn't disable the account by itself. Repeated policy violations, which a bad quality rating often accompanies, are what lead to the longer blocks and eventual disablement.

Do unofficial WhatsApp apps ever come back after an update?

No. WhatsApp's enforcement targets the practice, not a specific app version. Switching to another unofficial clone after one is banned carries the same risk as the first.

Will paying for a service that claims to unban WhatsApp accounts work?

No. No third party has access to WhatsApp's or Meta's account systems. These services can't lift a ban or speed up a review; the only legitimate paths are WhatsApp's own Request a review button or, for the Business Platform, Business Support Home.
