Meta uses the word "verified" for two different things, and half the confusion around business verification comes from mixing them up.
- Business verification is free. It proves to Meta that your business portfolio belongs to a real, registered business. You do it once in Meta Business Suite with your legal details and, sometimes, a document.
- Meta Verified for Business is a paid subscription that adds a badge, impersonation protection and access to support. It's covered in Meta Verified for Business: what you get and whether it's worth it.
This guide is about the first one: how to complete business verification, what Meta checks, and the handful of mistakes behind most rejections.
Why business verification matters
Meta doesn't make verification mandatory for every advertiser, but a verified portfolio is treated as lower risk, and some things depend on it:
| Area | Why verification helps |
|---|---|
| Ads | Unverified portfolios are more likely to hit spending limits and identity checks, especially as spend grows or in regulated industries |
| WhatsApp Business Platform | Verification is part of moving past starter messaging limits and getting a display name approved |
| Apps and integrations | Some Meta permissions and app reviews ask for a verified business |
| Restrictions | A verified, consistent business identity gives a review request more to stand on |
If you run ads for clients, the client's portfolio is the one that should be verified, with the client's own legal details. See what a Meta business portfolio is and how agencies should get access to it.
Before you start
Have these ready. Most rejections come from a detail that doesn't match exactly, so copy them from your official documents rather than typing from memory.
| You need | Notes |
|---|---|
| Full control of the business portfolio | If you can't open Security Center, you aren't a full admin |
| The legal business name | As it appears on your registration, including "LLC", "Ltd" or "Inc". Not your brand name or trading name |
| Registered address and business phone number | Must match your documents |
| A working business website | It should load, use HTTPS and show the same business |
| A way to confirm: business email, phone or domain | Email on your own domain is the easiest route |
| One or two official documents, just in case | See the list below |
How to verify your business, step by step
- Open Meta Business Suite, go to Settings, then Security Center.
- Click Start verification. If you see Ineligible for verification, you don't need to do it here. Some products, such as WhatsApp, may ask you to verify from their own setup screens instead.
- Enter the legal business name, address, phone number and website exactly as they appear on your registration.
- Meta looks for a matching business record. If one appears that's yours, select it. If none match, choose My business isn't listed or None of these match, and Meta will ask you to upload documents.
- Confirm that you're connected to the business. Depending on what's offered, that's a code sent by email, phone call, text, WhatsApp, or domain verification. Email works best on an address at your own domain. If your domain is already verified in Meta, you can use that directly.
- Submit and wait for the result in Business Suite notifications and by email.
How long it takes varies a lot. Some businesses are approved almost immediately, while document reviews can take days, and partner guides report up to about two weeks. Meta doesn't publish a fixed time.
Documents Meta accepts
Meta wants documents that show your legal business name, plus your address or phone number. Typical examples:
| Document | Proves name | Proves address or phone |
|---|---|---|
| Certificate or articles of incorporation | Yes | Sometimes |
| Business license or registration certificate | Yes | Usually |
| Tax or VAT registration | Yes | Usually |
| Business bank statement | Yes | Yes |
| Utility or phone bill in the business name | Supports it | Yes |
A utility bill on its own usually isn't enough to prove the name, but it's a good second document to prove the address. Upload clear, complete, recent scans: no cropped edges, no photos taken at an angle, no expired documents.
Why business verification gets rejected
| Reason | What it looks like | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Name mismatch | "Acme Marketing" entered, "Acme Marketing Ltd" on the certificate | Enter the legal name character for character, suffix and punctuation included |
| Trading name instead of legal name | Brand name or "doing business as" name entered | Use the registered legal entity name |
| Address mismatch | "Street" vs "St", missing suite number, old office | Match the document exactly, or upload a document with the current address |
| Website doesn't match | Site belongs to another brand, doesn't load, or isn't HTTPS | Use a site that shows the same business and loads securely |
| Unreadable or expired documents | Blurry photo, cut-off corners, out-of-date bill | Upload a fresh, complete PDF scan |
| Wrong confirmation channel | Code sent to an email or phone you can't access | Pick a method you control, or verify your domain first |
Two more things catch people out:
- Editing your business details can trigger a new check. Changing the legal name, address, phone or website after approval may put the portfolio back under review. Update details only when they've actually changed, and keep documents ready.
- Don't create a new portfolio to start over. A rejected verification can be fixed and resubmitted from Security Center. A fresh portfolio with the same details looks like an attempt to get around a decision, which causes bigger problems than the rejection. See Facebook ad account disabled or restricted for how that can spread.
If you're rejected
- Open Security Center and read the rejection reason.
- Compare every field you entered against your documents, letter by letter.
- Fix the fields or upload a document that clearly shows the missing detail.
- Resubmit.
If you can't see why it failed, or the option to resubmit has gone, contact Meta through Business Support Home. Our guide on how to contact Meta Business Support shows which route reaches a person.
Questions people ask
Is business verification the same as Meta Verified?
No. Business verification is a free identity check for your business portfolio. Meta Verified for Business is a paid subscription with a verified badge and support. You can have one without the other. Read Meta Verified for Business for the paid one.
Does business verification give me a blue badge?
No. Verification happens behind the scenes in Business Suite and doesn't add a badge to your Page or profile. The badge comes from Meta Verified.
How much does Meta business verification cost?
Business verification itself is free. If you see a small charge from Meta, it's usually unrelated, for example an ad account authorising your card. The paid product people mean when they talk about cost is Meta Verified.
Do I need business verification to run ads?
Not always. Many advertisers run ads without it. But verification becomes more important as spend grows, in regulated industries, and when Meta asks for it after flagging an account.
Can an agency verify a client's business?
The client's portfolio should be verified with the client's own legal details and documents. An agency admin can do the clicking if the client gives full control, but the business being verified is always the client's.
